A vision being brought to life by people like you.

In six years we developed 46 Peace Gardens - all with the purpose to grow food to feed the hungry. Each Peace Garden was associated with a food pantry for distribution to people in need. What we discovered was several fold:

  • First, many people in the urban environment did not know how to garden anymore. Most were two and three generations away from the knowledge for growing their own food.
  • Second, many people had no knowledge their food was grown out of the ground - often believing food came out of a box or bag rather than a garden.
  • Third, soils in many Peace Garden sites contained environmental hazards and safe urban farming practices mandate the development of barrier layers and safe fertile compost.

As a result, we developed the vision for the Peaceful Grounds Initiative. We wanted to develop a farm to fork model that would serve as a destination point for community learning about urban agriculture and sustainable living.

The Peaceful Grounds Initiative project began development on an abandoned site in southern Marion County, Indiana. After two years of soil development the initiative moved to the Marion County Fairgrounds. Peaceful Grounds is now located at the Marion County Fairgrounds, which is well suited for and shares the mission to provide agriculture exposition to Marion County. Built through volunteers, in the first year the Peaceful Grounds Initiative facilitated 2092 youth in service for 18,623 volunteer hours. Check out pictures of their efforts here. We are very proud and grateful to them for their accomplishments and contributions in these first three years.

The Marion County Fairgrounds is a great new home for every aspect of this important initiative. With vast landscape and a shared mission, several component parts of the Peaceful Grounds Initiative are operational.
